Join USA Properties Fund, Inc. as we look back on 4 decades of creating outstanding communities, and towards the future as we continue to provide affordable housing in California and other Western states.
Our company began as a partnership with a savings and loan in Ohio, and in the beginning we built and sold both single-family homes and multifamily housing. In 1989, we took over a project to build affordable housing in Desert Hot Springs, CA. With this project, our focus shifted, and we became a developer focused on creating quality affordable housing that would be indistinguishable from conventional multifamily housing.
As we continued to expand our portfolio, working to change the stigma associated with affordable housing through quality design, we realized we had an opportunity to positively impact the lives of those within our communities. We brought in social services, like after-school programs and support for seniors, often provided by LifeSTEPS. In 2011, in partnership with LifeSTEPS, we founded the J.B. Brown Fund, offering residents at our affordable communities an opportunity for a college scholarship. This quickly expanded to offer scholarships for youth sports, and emergency financial assistance (and education!) for families and seniors.
As we celebrate our 40th anniversary, USA Properties currently provides 12,500 apartment homes in California and Nevada. Through the J.B. Brown Fund, we’ve helped over 900 households, providing more than $1.2 million in scholarships and financial assistance grants.
Looking to the future, our goal of creating outstanding communities, and using housing as a conduit to address other challenges, remains at the forefront. To that end, we’ve collaborate with LifeSTEPS on their award-winning RN Coaching Pilot Program, which provides seniors access to free healthcare in their apartment communities. We continue to seek out opportunities to participate in transit-oriented development, adding the housing component to emerging and redeveloping neighborhoods. And, we recently started our first-ever modular housing project, as we look for ways to continue to build efficiently and sustainably.
